When I was pregnant with my first child I spent a great deal of time reading about prenatal nutrition. What struck me the most in my research was something I read about about listening to your food cravings and their hidden meanings. I can’t remember where I read this but it’s something that stood out to me then and still sticks with me now. Basically, it pointed out that what you crave is your body’s way of telling you it needs a certain type of nutrition. For example, I craved hamburgers so my body was telling me I needed more protein in my diet. When I craved M & M’s what I really needed was the vitamins and minerals that come from fresh fruit.
