The Runner’s High

Many people have asked me how I can be so dedicated to exercise. For them it is a chore to exercise, something they know they should do for their health but dread. I often respond that I get a high from exercise and that my body depends on it. I usually get a funny look back or a laugh. Truly though I am not joking. Exercise is like a powerful drug for me that keeps pulling me back to the gym every day. Some people call this the “runners high” which is the blissful feeling of the rush of an endorphin release. This usually starts about 20 minutes in to my workouts and keeps going even after I finish.

I started to exercise hard because I was unsatisfied with how I looked after having 3 children, but now it’s all about my mental health. Here are some psychological effects of exercise that research has shown:

  • Decreased anxiety
  • Reduced depression
  • Reduced stress
  • Improved self esteem
  • A sense of accomplishment
  • Increased energy levels
  • Increased confidence

If you stick to a good exercise program and start to feel these psychological benefits, you will become hooked. Make it a habit and never give up!
